Virginia Barber and Cosmetology Related Professions

IMPORTANT: January 1, 2020, PCS will no longer serve as the testing vendor for The Board for Barbers and Cosmetology, the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR). The following information is very important. Please be aware of and plan for specific deadlines in order for you to experience a smooth transition:

The final practical examination PCS will administer will be held in Richmond, Northern Virginia, and Roanoke on 12/23/19.

First Time candidate applications must be approved for the practical examination by the deadline date of 12/02/19.

Re-exam candidate applications must be received and approved for the practical examination by the deadline date of 12/09/19.

Candidates who need to take or retake their theory examination, must schedule to test with Prometric no later than 12/16/19.

The last date Prometric will test theory examination candidates is 12/23/19.

Note: Refunds WILL NOT be issued if you do not test prior to the deadline dates. No exceptions will be made. Please plan accordingly

Do you want to apply for a barber or cosmetology profession in the State of Virginia? Before we get started, please review the steps below and confirm you have all the necessary information needed to continue.

PHASE 1

Application Process

To kick things off, you need to purchase an application for your desired profession. Here's how:

  • 1 Download and read your Candidate Information Bulletin (CIB).
  • 2 Browse available applications and select the application and examination(s) you’d like to complete.
  • 3 Purchase your examination.
  • 4 Following payment, you may complete the application online.
  • 5 You will be informed through the application process what additional forms or documents will be required for you to upload or mail in order for your application to be considered complete. Once all required documentation has been provided, your application will be reviewed to determine eligibility.
PHASE 2

Application Review

After you submit an application, we'll review your files and get back to you. Here are the details:

  • 1 Once your application has been submitted, together with all required documentation, the VA Coordinator will begin to review your application and documentation to determine whether you are eligible to take the examination for which you are applying.
  • 2 The VA Coordinator will email you if there are any deficiencies in your application or if you are missing required documentation.  In some cases, the VA Coordinator may forward your application to the Board for review and approval.

    NOTE:  After you upload your application to your account, you may check the status of your application at any time by logging into your account.
  • 3 Once your application has been approved, you will receive an email from PCS stating you are approved to test.
PHASE 3

Examination

You're almost there! The application has been accepted, and you're ready to take the examination. Here's what to expect:

  • 1 If you are taking the practical examination, PCS will email you an admission notice no later than 7 days prior to your scheduled examination. You must take the Admission Notice with you to the exam site, either in paper form or electronically.
  • 2 If you are taking the theory (written) examination, PCS will email you an Authorization to Test letter that contains instructions for scheduling your examination with Prometric.
  • 3 Take your examinations on the dates and times as scheduled.
PHASE 4

Post-Examination

Congrats! Now that you've taken your exam, it's time to wait on the results. As usual, we're here to stay connected along the way:

  • 1 After your theory examination, you will receive an unofficial score notice immediately following your test.
  • 2 Within 10 business days from the date of your practical and theory examination, PCS will email your official results to you.

    NOTE: If you fail an examination, instructions for reapplying will be provided on your score notice.
  • 3 Once all required examination(s) have been passed, you will receive a Notice of Completion and a Licensure Fee Notice that must be completed and provided to the DPOR prior to their issuing your license. Once you pass all required examinations, PCS will send your scores to the DPOR.
